The Power of the Pomegranate
Tuesday, January 24th, 2012
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), stroke is the third leading cause of death in women. Every year an estimated 97,000 American women will die as a result of stroke. Statistically, every 53 seconds stroke will victimize someone in America. Of an estimated 600,000 stroke victims each year about 160,000 die as a result. There is, however, an easy way to drastically reduce these statistics.
Findings in a 14-year-long study of nearly 80,000 American women indicate that eating a 3.5 ounce serving of fish, two to four times a week, lowers stroke risk by 27 percent. The more fish consumed, the more impressive the percentages. Although few large-scale studies have examined this particular issue in men, experts say there is no biological reason results of such studies would differ.
The American Medical Association (AMA) published the study results in their January journal, 2001. There is conclusive evidence that consumption of fish high in omega 3 fatty acids hold significant health benefits, including reduced thrombotic infarction — a type of stroke where a blood clot blocks an artery in the brain, resulting in destroyed brain tissue. (Blood clots are responsible for more than 80 percent of all strokes.)
Fish are a high source of omega 3 fatty acids, nutrients that help prevent the formation of clots, or "platelet clumping." They do this by making blood less "sticky." As a result, risk of thrombotic stroke is lessened, as well as risk of embolic stroke, where the clot forms elsewhere in the body before traveling to the brain.
Conducted at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, the study revealed that women who ate fish once a week reduced stoke risk by 22 percent; two to four times a week by 27 percent, and five or more times a week by 52 percent. Unfortunately, the average American woman only consumes about 1.3 servings of any type seafood weekly, at an average of 3.5 ounces per serving. Women are not eating enough fish!
Penny Kris Etherton, Ph.D., a heart disease researcher at the State University in Pennsylvania, has long extolled the virtues of eating fish for health purposes. "I clearly tell people to eat fish and shellfish regularly to lower the risk of heart disease."
National Fisheries Institute (NFI) President, Richard E. Gutting, Jr., agrees. "The benefits of eating fish continue to mount as more studies are conducted," he noted. Gutting also said that women of all ages "should enjoy the variety and great taste of fish and seafood on a regular basis."
How the fish is prepared is important, as omega 3 fatty acids can be destroyed by heat, air, and light. NFI recommends not overcooking the meat and the use of low fat cooking methods: baking, broiling, poaching, steaming, stir-frying, grilling, or sautéing. Cook just until the point of doneness for maximum benefit. Avoid deep-frying, as it not only destroys more omega 3, but also adds to the total fat content.
If eating fish isn’t your cup of tea, you might try fish oil supplements. Most experts do not advise the routine use of fish oil supplements, however, for two reasons:
1.) possible side effects — fishy breath, gastrointestinal upset, and easy bruising. 2.) a false sense of security derived from taking fish oil for heath purposes, when the diet itself may be unhealthy.
Besides fish and fish oil supplements, other good omega 3 fatty acid sources include canola oil, flaxseed oil, soybean oil, certain nuts and vegetables, and tofu. However, one would have to eat at least several times the normal amount of any of these other sources to gain the same benefit from one regular size serving of fish.
Institute of Food Technologist, Joyce Nettleton, D. Sc., R.D. suggests that because eating fish alone won’t compensate for unhealthy eating habits, "fish and other shellfish should be eaten as part of a low fat diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables."
Besides boasting stroke resistant benefits, the fatty acids of omega 3 act as "health heroes" against hypertension, breast cancer, and depression. Other benefits include: less chance of developing heart disease, lower risk of heart attack even where heart disease does exist, lower blood pressure, possible improvement of kidney function in severe diabetes, and possible improvement of certain inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, psoriasis, and kidney disease.
In addition, nutrients found in healthy, uncontaminated fish help to insure proper development of fetal brain, eye, and nervous tissue during pregnancy. But, caution should be taken.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in a recent consumer advisory, pregnant women should not consume shark, swordfish, or king mackerel or should limit consumption to not more than once a month.
These large predator fish could contain higher levels of methyl mercury than the FDA limit for safe human consumption — 1 part per million (1ppm). Over consumption risks damage to the fetal nervous system. Even fresh water predator species such as pike and walleye have been found to have methyl mercury levels in the 1ppm range.
While it’s true nearly all fish contain trace elements of mercury, larger, older and predator fish accumulate the highest levels and pose the greatest threat, while younger fish caught after only one season in polluted water have less. Even so, a variety of fish and other seafood that offer a naturally low fat source of protein can be an important part of a balanced diet for mothers-to-be.
According to one FDA advisor, pregnant women can consume up to 12 ounces of cooked fish each week: shellfish, canned fish, smaller ocean fish or farm raised fish. Farm raised rainbow trout are most likely fed high protein foods containing a combination of soy and fish meal which make them an even better source of omega 3 fatty acid. Seven ounces of canned tuna can be safely consumed each week by pregnant women and nursing mothers if no other fish containing mercury is eaten.
Despite FDA warnings for pregnant women, the results of the survey hold wonderful news, and women should be greatly encouraged. We now have scientific proof that there is a positive step available toward reducing the risk of stroke. Even if you don’t like fish, consuming just one 3.5 ounce serving one or two times a month can reduce risk of stroke by 7 percent.
Certain kinds of fish are more beneficial than others. For instance, because Alaska is relatively unpopulated there is little industry to pollute the streams and ocean. Lack of pollution combined with the earth’s water and air circulation patterns make Alaska’s pristine waters, and consequently its seafood among the cleanest in the world.
Numerous studies support this assertion. In 1998 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) did a survey of seafood from the waters of Cook Inlet, located near Anchorage, Alaska. Results indicate that fin fish and shellfish caught in Cook Inlet were cleaner than any the EPA had ever tested. In addition, plentiful Alaska Salmon, one of the richest natural sources of omega 3 fatty acid available, are not among the publicized "endangered" varieties of salmon.
Although light meat fish such as perch, flounder, and whiting have only about 0.5 grams of omega 3 fatty acid per 4 ounce serving, fish varieties with dark meat such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, and bluefish contain roughly three times the amount of protective stroke reducing omega 3 fatty acid. Fresh tuna, striped bass, and rainbow smelt are also rich sources. So if you’re going to limit fish intake, a dark meat fish is your best choice.
Whether for purposes of hobby or health, fishing is relaxing and something the whole family can enjoy together. This fun "sport" has the potential to enhance your health and your marriage.
So, go ahead! Get a fishing license, grab a pole, and hit the shoreline. Eat "the fruits of your labor" five times a week to reduce stroke risk by as much as 52 percent. Then brag about the "big one" that got away!

The problem with mass produced mattresses is they can only cater for general body shapes. The little bumps and curves that make us individual are left unattended. The muscles supporting these parts of our body never get the opportunity to relax. Where we feel this most acutely is the lower back and our neck. In both cases these muscles work all day to support large and uniquely shaped parts of our body. The lack of relief that an inadequate mattress brings can lead directly to lower back and neck aches, this is definitely not the way that you would want to begin a new day. The unique element memory foam brings to a mattress is to allow it to conform to each individual body shape. This means that no matter what size and shape you are you are going to get total body support. The muscles that previously remained tense can now relax and you can sink into that deep recuperative sleep we all need. The reasons why memory foam can succeed where other mattresses fail is due entirely to its unique construction. The structure of the foam allows it to react to both pressure and temperature.
The significance of this breakthrough is best illustrated by imagining you are floating perfectly level on a calm lake, your hips and head partly submerged in the water but every other point along your body in contact with the surface of the water. The effect is almost dream like. The effect of gravity has been minimalised and all the pressure on your muscles and skeleton have been removed. The effect of RESTORE® memory foam is similar. The unique construction of this material allows it to react to both temperature and pressure. The larger more prominent regions of your body meld to the foam while the curves of your spine neck and legs remain gently supported. The effect is the same regardless of your sleeping position. The other feature of RESTORE® memory foam that further enhances its effectiveness is its density. The high density of RESTORE® memory foam prevents any pressure build up where you are pressing most firmly against it, this is significant when you realise that the vast majority of people sleeping on conventional mattresses roll about during the night seeking more comfortable sleeping positions. This night time tussle is disruptive to not only your quality of sleep but to anyone else sharing your bed. If you are suffering from poor quality sleep then RETORE® memory foam mattresses and toppers could make tomorrow a better day for you.
If the doctors were right about food and the colon, then they would easily be able to help you clear your acne with their drugs. Drugs can give you temporary relief, it they work at all, but as you use them they can also give you some unpleasant side effects.
In her book, Food And Healing, 1986, Annemarie Colbin, points out,
“In a systems view of the body, input of all kinds relates to output of all kinds. Food, therefore, would have a definite relationship to matter pushed out through the skin. I am continually amazed that dermatologists persist in viewing the skin as merely a protective envelope for the body, ascribing its eruptions to ‘viruses’ and imprecise malfunctions and supporting the myth that ‘diet has nothing to do with acne.’
In my experience, diet has everything to do with acne. Not only did I fix my own bad skin through correct eating but I have seen among my students a number of severe cases – the large purplish kind of acne on cheeks and chins – completely cured within three months by a change of diet.”
Foods to Stop Eating
If you smoke, drink alcohol or drink coffee, then this program will not work too well for you. When you have these addictions, your body’s minerals and vitamins will be out of balance and it will be difficult for you to achieve any state of good health.
So, here are they foods that you need to stop eating. You don’t need to stop eating these foods instantly. Not many people can do this. You need to do this gradually. I know it will be hard to stop eating some of these foods that you have enjoyed, over the years, but you have to ask yourself the question,
“Which do I want to be â¦Acne free or a junk food addict?”
The choice is yours and I know you will make the right decision so here is the list,
* White Bread – This is considered junk food since it is void of any vitality for your body. It is hard to digest and causes constipation
* Chocolate – some chocolates are better than others. Those that have saturated fats such milk, butter and sugars are not good for your health and definitely not good for your skin.
* Fried Fatty foods – fried foods, butter, chesses, beef,
* Foods in packages – All foods in packages or boxes are junk food. They are considered dead food and provide no life force to your body. They take from you because they use up minerals, vitamins, and digestive enzymes during digestion. They contain no fiber so they cause constipation.
* Foods with artificial flavors and preservatives – These are non-foods that are super toxic. Your body does not know what to do with them so it stores them in your body as toxic waste.
* Milk, ice cream, hard chesses – these foods cause allergies and cause mucus to form. This mucus coats the colon and other internal surfaces and interferes with the function of that area. Bacteria and other pathogens enjoy living in the mucus film. This mucus also tries to escape through the face when you have too much of it in the body. If you cannot digest dairy products, this can cause you to have acne.
* Sodas are the worst drink you can take. They contain plenty of sugar and phosphoric acid.
* Sugar is considered a white poison. It creates so many health problems in the body that the FDA should outlaw it.
* Salt – avoid salt only because it has iodine. Iodine has been shown to cause acne.
* Excess Vitamin B12 – can aggravate or produce acne.
There you have it. It takes a lot of will power and desire to change your diet. It can be done but do it slowly. Start changing your diet and see where you’re at in 6 months.
YEARS IN DEVELOPMENT
The concept of lenses made from silicone hydrogel was first proposed over 20 years ago. The potential benefits were clear but the technological challenge was as difficult as needing to combine oil and water to produce an optically clear product. Researcher organizations have to date invested considerable academic and financial resources to achieve the high performance soft lenses of today. They have done this quite simply because they see this material as the way forward and the ultimate standard of the future.
At the time of writing, silicone hydrogel lenses are available in the USA from four manufacturers: “Night & Day” and “O2OPTIX” from CIBA Vision, “Pure Vision” from Bausch & Lomb, and “Acuvue OASYS” and “Advance” from J&J Vision Care.
OXYGEN TRANSPORT
So whatâs so special about silicone hydrogel as a lens material? Essentially, the great benefit of this material is itâs ability to transport oxygen to the eye and thus maintain proper eye health. Modern contact lens technology is all to do with oxygen permability, which is measured using the “Dk” index. And for optimal oxygen transmission, this must be as high as possible.
The Dk of traditional, non-silicone based hydrogel lenses is directly related to the amount of water that the material can hold, since oxygen dissolves into the water-component of the material and thus diffuses through the lens. The Dk in fact increases logarithmically with increasing water content. Water itself has a Dk of only 80, thus placing a ceiling on the Dk of convential materials, and the original soft contact lens material, polyHEMA, possesses a Dk of only around 10 (with a water content of about 38%).
However, in silicone hydrogels, the relationship between Dk and water content is the opposite. Here higher water content implies lower Dk. With these lenses Dk increases significantly as the silicone content – not water content – of the lens increases. The Dk values of silicone hydrogel contact lenses are much higher than those of older soft lens materials.
SLEEPING IN CONTACT LENSES
According to market data from CIBA Vision, 84% of soft contact lens wearers occasionally sleep with their lenses in, and one-third admit to doing this regularly. 25% of wearers of one to two-week disposable lenses with low oxygen transmissibility occasionally or routinely sleep in their lenses overnight. And 72% of soft contact lens wearers said they would prefer to be allowed to wear their lenses overnight provided it was safe.
Thus the demand for lenses with the capablities of silicone hydrogels is evidently very high with almost three-quarters of soft lens wearers wanting to be able to sleep in their lenses.
LENS HANDLING
Silicone hydrogel lenses are significantly more rigid than their conventional counterparts, due to the presence of silicone. This increased rigidity does possess some advantages, making the lenses markedly easier to handle and thus the ideal choice for wearers with a less delicate touch. There is a downside to this however in that the rigidity makes the lenses less prone to adopting the shape of the eye so readily, resulting in the possibility for some of reduced comfort.
REDUCED DEPOSITIONS
Historically, the deposition of proteins and lipids has been a problem with contact lenses. The amount of depositions is essentially linked to the duration of wear, the lens material and the tear composition of each individual wearer. With traditional lenses, a frequent replacement schedule greatly reduces the buildup of harmful deposits.
Silicone hydrogel contact lenses have been proven to offer major benefits in the reduction of protein and lysozyme deposition. Indeed, combined with the correct replacement schedule and appropriate care system, problems associated with protein deposition have become almost a thing of the past.
DRY EYES
A problem frequently encountered by wearers of traditional soft contact lenses is one of a feeling of discomfort and “grittiness” in the eyes towards the end of the day. It has been reported that after one week wearing silicone hydrogel lenses, the quantity of regular soft lens wearers in a particular study group who previously suffered significantly from end-of-day dryness, was reduced dramatically to only 13% of the sample.
LIFESTYLE BENEFITS
Silicone hydrogel contact lenses also provide some benefits that conventional lenses don’t. Continuous wear contact lenses can be particularly beneficial for use by members of certain professions, such as medical workers, police, the armed forces and firefighters who frequently work unpredictable and long hours.
Furthermore, an increasing numbers of contact lens wearers can now enjoy active outdoor lifestyles, enjoying pursuits such as camping and hiking where it is often difficult to handle and disinfect the lenses with the appropriate level of hygiene.
THE FUTURE FOR CONTACT LENSES
There is much evidence to suggest that, owing to their significant benefits over conventional soft lenses, silicone hydrogel lenses will ultimately, and sooner rather than later, displace other types of contact lens as the prefferred choice for both daily and overnight wear for the majority of contact lens wearers. Silicone hydrogel lenses provide a much improved physical performance, excellent handling properties and greater comfort. They might be considered as the ideal lens for general purpose use that exists today and are likely to become the new everyday standard.

As with most days I wake up early, grab a cup of coffee, and catch a little business news to see just how quickly my retirement savings are vanishing. Probably, not that much different than many of you reading this article.
But today was a little more depressing than most as the CEO of one of the major medical insurance companies was describing how he had been working on a plan to drive down the cost of health insurance.
I must admit, even for a self described wordsmith like myself what he said made my head spin and wonder whether someone had spiked my coffee. Well, my spouse was gone and that only leaves the pets. Could the cat have done it? Probably not!
My best interpretation of what he said was that he was diligently working with doctors to reduce the amount of treatment provided. Not only that his company was going to reward doctors for providing us less treatment.
A scary message, but I fear this could easily be an omen of things to come leaving most of us to fend for ourselves or at the very least not receiving the quality of care we have become accustomed to.
This leads us to the possibility that achieving wellness with the help of natural remedies possibly combined with better lifestyle choices could be our only defense against disease and illness down the road. In other words focusing on preventative medicine instead of reactive medicine.
The world of natural and alternative medicine includes herbal supplements, homeopathic remedies, chiropractic care, aromatherapy, mind and body therapies, and so much more. For those of you who haven’t explored this world, or have opted to go to the dark side with a handful of prescription drugs daily, this might be a good time to rediscover the world of natural health and wellness.
Â
According to the CDC the average American age 60 takes 5 prescription medications every day.
Herbal and homeopathic remedies along with omega 3 supplements will be three of the best tools at your disposal for preventing illness and achieving optimal health.
Herbal remedies such as echinacea (immune system health), goldenseal root (immune system health), bilberry (for eyesight), saw palmetto (prostate health), ginkgo biloba (mental clarity), ginseng (circulation and general wellness), passion flower (anxiety), and St. John’s wort (mild depression) are just a few herbs which have been used for centuries to help prevent illness and work with the body to heal illness.
While herbal medicine can be put to good use many natural health advocates believe homeopathy is perhaps the most underrated natural treatment method of all.
If you aren’t familiar with this type of medicine it is the science of dilutions. When homeopathic remedies are carefully formulated by an expert they are not only considered to be one of the safest treatments available but some of the most effective.
And finally, there are the omega 3 supplements which are thought to help with over 60 different conditions and illnesses including improving heart and artery health, reducing arthritis pain and discomfort, and tamping down internal inflammation.
If a person were to combine these three natural remedies with chiropractic care, exercise, and few lifestyle modifications there is a good chance they would feel a whole lot better and spend less time in the doctor’s office.Â
Perhaps, the aforementioned CEO believes he has all of us over the barrel but he really doesn’t, that is if we are willing to take aggressive preventative steps to achieve optimal health and wellness.  Â
Most people have taken refuge in less expensive, milder and easy at home acne treatments. There are several ways to make use of most at home acne treatment remedies that are effective yet less expensive than their media-hyped counterparts.
It is the best topical solution for treating adult acne. It can keep the bacterial infections at bay. There are many other topical medications such as sulfur and benzoyl peroxide but these treatments aren’t certified for body safety by the authority. Tea tree oil zaps the bacteria which cause acne formation underneath your skin. It is a good natural acne treatment, very cheap and doesn’t cause any side effects.
Glycolic acid. This is a natural acid contained in sugar cane. By applying glycolic acid on your skin, dead skin cells are removed, pores are unclogged and the appearance of acne scars is slightly diminished. Side effects: redness, mild stinging and skin irritation.
Also by watching what food you eat, you’ll be able to control the outcome of how your skin looks. Although eating may not be the strongest method of acne treatment, it is also a known fact that fatty foods are not good for your body or skin. By taking vitamins from fresh fruit and veg and eating healthy, your body will be able to make the most of these nutrients and help you take care of your trouble spots.
Use lots of moisturizing creams: People having overly dry skin are recommending to use lots of moisturizers but to have best results pick the right one. Choose gels than lotions and creams as these gels are less greasy.
Your body normally expels toxins through your bowels and kidneys, but if you are not drinking enough water, you could be expelling toxins through your skin. Obviously this doesn’t help you keep your skin acne free. Drinking plenty of water will help you clear your body of these toxins while helping to prevent acne. Drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water each day will help a lot.
One of the important acne treatment tips that I want to tell you about is controlling the stress hormone “cortisol” by controlling your stress, this can decrease the acne condition. Also consider exercises and some activity in your lifestyle which help your circulation leading to more healthy skin by better waste management through your skin pores.

Most of the Men and Women are choosing various methods to grow hair and more hair. They are really trying every means to go for growing more hair. There are both herbal and also other types of medicated treatments to arrest the fall of hair growth. Over the last few years, many men and women are choosing to use the Trioxinator to grow more hair and to get rid of baldness. It is said to be the best solution for their aesthetic hair loss problems. The hair experts are really committed to make hair growth possible and are also making their best efforts. To recover them from the male and female pattern baldness, the trioxinator is doing a good job. Since hair loss is really a common problem these days.
There are several techniques to grow more hair, and both the organic and the inorganic route to hair growth is applied. The hair loss is mainly due to genetically problems and also some amounts of hereditary mismatch of the genes. Apart from that, there are certain other causes. This affects the grow more hair regime; it is the severe deficiency of various vitamins and minerals. The deficiency of calcium and manganese and the deficiency of vitamins, like Vitamin B complex, Vitamin D and others affects the formula of grow more hair fast. Then there is the related problem of pollution. This also affects the growth of good hair and replacing the old and tired out hair.
The mechanization of the hair growing techniques is really a point to be noted out. The trioxinator is a special type of hand held machine that helps to grow good hair. It is a type of mechanized massager, which helps to increase the circulation of blood and increases the growth of hair. This eventually helps to grow more hair. Hair growth can be affected by many related factors. They are mostly related to the health of the body and also for the vitamin deficiency. It is mainly related to the vitamin deficiency of the body, which indirectly affects the hair growth.
If the vitamin deficiency affects the growth of the body, it is also directly tied to the health of the hair. Vitamin deficiency really affects the growth of the hair. Sleep is also another main ingredient for the growth of the hair. Sleep brings rest for the brain and the head in general. Lack of sleep affects the overall metabolism of the body and also the stomach. This affects the stomach and makes grow more hair really difficult to sustain it for the longer term. The Trioxinator is the mechanical process to grow more hair. It is a type of message which improves the blood flow in the scalp and strengthens the hair root. The strength of the hair root makes the hair strong enough, so that it does not falls off. But the problem is to be repaired through a long time process of treatment.
Everyone knows how anxiety feels like. It happens when you are about to do a big presentation, when you are about to take a difficult exam, when you are worried about problems that you have at home or at work, or when you are being called for by your boss to his office. If we all feel anxiety, when does it become a disorder then?
Â
Anxiety disorder happens when you let your worries and your fears hinder you from living your life the way that you want to. The anxiety is excessive and exaggerated, and you worry over simple things that should not be a big concern for you. There are four aspects of experiences that are covered by anxiety and these are the physical signs and symptoms, dissociative anxiety, physical tension and mental apprehension. The symptoms of anxiety can occur in episodes or they can be continuous. Anxiety condition is common and surveys revealed that it occurs in about 18% of people in the United States.
Â
The causes of anxiety condition are not yet fully known but there are several factors that contribute to its development. Researchers say that family history plays a significant role in the development of anxiety disorder. If your parents or other family members suffer from this disorder, then there is a chance that you might also develop it. There are also biological causes of anxiety disorder which include the low level of GABA, the neurotransmitter that decreases the activity of the central nervous system. Environmental factors can also play a role in anxiety disorder such as stress and trauma, physical or sexual abuse, addiction and withdrawal from smoking, alcohol and other addictive substances.
Â
The different anxiety disorder symptoms are classified into emotional and physical. Aside from the exaggerated fear and worry, other manifestations also include being irritable and restless, being tense and anticipating the worse that will happen. You will also be apprehensive with feelings of dread and concentrating can be difficult. Physical anxiety disorder symptoms result from the flight or fight response of the body. These symptoms include muscle tension and tremors or twitching mostly in the upper and lower extremities. Headaches and fatigue are also common signs of an anxiety condition as well as diarrhea, frequent urination, shortness of breath, nausea and diaphoresis.
Â
You might be wondering if anxiety condition can be treated. The answer to that is yes. Anxiety disorder is highly treatable and the first step towards treatment is recognition of the problem. When you recognize and accept that you have a problem. When you are willing to do that, then you can get the help that you need. Talk to someone who can help you identify the causes of your anxiety. You can also develop a treatment plan, the ways on how you can deal with the problems and worries that you are facing. Medications are only needed in severe cases and if you can manage the anxiety disorder without them, it is better.
Â
Knowing what anxiety disorder is will help you know if you are suffering from this disorder. You will then be able to seek treatment earlier so that further problems are avoided.
Anxiety is a state of intense fear, uncertainty, uneasiness, or apprehension due to anticipation of an imagined or real threatening future event. Anxiety can be both physically and psychologically devastating to the Anxiety sufferer’s life. Anxiety is often sub-categorized according to the focus of the perceived threat. There is social anxiety, separation anxiety, dating anxiety, performance anxiety, math anxiety, etc. Stress and anxiety often go hand in hand and can result in anxiety depression as the individual feels powerless to receive any anxiety help.
There are a variety of anti-anxiety treatments to consider in overcoming anxiety. For some, anxiety medications prove to be a source of anxiety relief. Other’s prefer not to use any of the anti-anxiety drugs and opt for more natural cures for anxiety management. These may include herbs for anxiety, acupuncture anxiety treatments, anxiety vitamins, aromatherapy for anxiety relief, even hypnosis has has proved beneficial overcoming anxiety.
This article discusses the perhaps little known amino acid L-Theanine as a natural remedy for anxiety relief.
L-Theanine is a unique free form amino acid found only in the tea plant and in the mushrooms Xerocomus badius and certain species of genus Camellia, C. japonica and C. sasanqua. Often drinkers of green tea report a feeling of calmness they feel after ingesting a cup or two even though green tea has roughly half the caffeine of coffee. This is due to the high L-Theanine content.
In addition to reducing anxiety symptoms, studies have shown L-Theanine may be effective in promoting concentration, supporting the immune system, improving learning performance, lowering blood pressure, increasing formation of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, and increasing brain dopamine levels among other positive benefits with no known downside.
Studies in cooperation with Taiyo Kagaku Co., The University of Shizuoka, and The Family Planning Institute of Japan have shown that women taking 200 mg L-Theanine daily have lower incidence of PMS symptoms. These symptoms include physical, mental, and social symptoms. Overall, a significant alleviation of PMS symptoms by L-Theanine was observed.
While still under investigation, L-Theanine appears to have a role in the formation of the inhibitory neurotransmitter Gamma Amino Butyric Acid (GABA). GABA blocks release of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, playing a key role in the relaxation effect.
Everyone knows the effects stress and anxiety can have on an individual’s physical state of well-being. Fascinating neurochemistry research has revealed that given a shot of GABA essentially turned back the clocks in the brains of older monkeys, whose brain function briefly operated at levels normally seen in monkeys less than half their age.
GABA, or gamma-amino butyric acid, is a neurotransmitter chemical that is essential for optimizing how brain cells transmit messages to each other and acts to put a damper on unwanted brain signaling activity. Although GABA’s age-related decline has not been documented in humans, a host of studies in mammals, including other primates, suggests that a similar process is at work in people.
Monkeys ages 26 and 32 — considered old age for monkeys — that got GABA directly delivered to their neurons responded to visual patterns, such as flashing vertical and horizontal lines, in much the same way as monkeys aged 7 to 9 years old did.
Without GABA delivery, the monkeys’ aged brains had more difficulty firing neurons that specifically gauge various aspects of depth perception, motion and color. Instead, older monkeys have more random firings that make it difficult to observe visual nuances. In younger monkeys, GABA had no effect since their brains already had optimal GABA functioning.
L-Theanine is considered to be safe based on its historical use as a component of tea and on favorable toxicology studies. Tea is the most consumed beverage worldwide after water, and has been consumed for thousands of years by billions of people. It is estimated that a heavy tea drinker (6-8 cups daily) will consume between 200 to 400 mg of L-Theanine daily.
While dosage for depression and anxiety disorder remain individual, it is recommended to take 100 to 200 mg 1 to 3 times daily for anxiety relief. Based on the results of clinical studies, it has been established that L-Theanine is effective in single dosages in the range of 50-200 mg. It is suggested that subjects with higher levels of anxiety take a dose at the higher end of the effective range (100 – 200 mg) for overcoming anxiety.
